Hundreds Debate LG Headquarters at Master Plan Hearing

Englewood Cliffs is considering an amendment that would allow for more high-rise developments along the Palisades, report says.

A hearing Wednesday night meant to discuss a possible Master Plan change in Englewood Cliffs became a battle ground for locals fighting over the controversial plan to build a 143-feet tall LG Electronics headquarters overlooking the Palisades, NorthJersey.com reported.

According to the report, residents and environmentalists came out against the project, citing its potential impact on the cliffs. Meanwhile, trade union leaders argued that the project would bring jobs to the area, the report said.

The hearing, which attracted hundreds of people, is just the latest in a string of arguments surrounding the LG building.

According to the report, the borough’s zoning board approved a variance in 2012 that would allow for the building to exceed Englewood Cliffs’s 35-foot building height limit. The board has since been abolished and a string of lawsuits have been filed surrounding the decision to allow for the building, reports say.

Wednesday’s hearing was meant to discuss a possible amendment to the town’s Master Plan that would allow for more high rise development along Sylvan Avenue near the Palisades, the report said. The Planning Board concluded the hearing without voting on the possibility, and plans to hold another meeting in the future to discuss it, the report said.
